hamburg’s hafencity is one of europe’s most interesting, ambitious and biggest urban development projects. The new urban area is coined by a constant constructional change resp. development.
In this quarter hamburg’s new landmark, the elbphilharmonie, is currently being built. With an installation of the same title I want to document the constructional development from august this year until its dedication in may 2012.
Once a month I am going to document the progress of the construction work in exposing three slide films. These are to be filled in one of the preserving jars which are arranged in chronological order. At first the 34 jars are empty, each month one of them will be filled. In short three years a unique archive on the constructional development of the elbphilharmonie will be generated – alas without visible images, since the slides in the preserving jars will be permantly subducted from view. Permanently in the sense of the jars shall not be opened.
This way the installation tells about the history/development of the elbphilharmonie without visible images in a set time frame. In fact the beholder has to imagine his own inner pictures. The installation merely acts as a catalyst resp. projection screen.
Per each jar three slide films will be exposed, that is that each jar is going to be filled with 108 slides. Over 34 months a collection of ca. 3.600 slides emerges from 102 slide films. While being in progress the work is exhibited in the premises of an international law firm in the proximate vicinity of theelbphilharmonie.

die hafencity in hamburg ist eines der spannendsten, ehrgeizigsten und grössten stadterweiterungsprojekte europas. das neue stadtgebiet wird durch die ständige bauliche veränderung bzw weiterentwicklung geprägt.
in diesem quartier entsteht derzeit auch das neue wahrzeichen von hamburg – die elbphilharmonie. mit meiner gleichnamigen installation möchte ich die bauliche entwicklung ab august dieses jahres bis zur einweihung im mai 2012 dokumentieren.
einmal im monat werde ich den baufortschritt dokumentieren und drei diafilme belichten. diese werden in einem der chronologisch angeordneten einmachgläser der installation verfüllt. zu beginn sind alle 34 gläser leer, monatlich wird jeweils eines gefüllt. über knapp drei jahre entsteht so ein einzigartiges archiv über die bauliche entwicklung der elbphilharmonie – allerdings ohne sichtbare bilder, da die dias in den einmachgläsern der betrachtung dauerhaft entzogen sind. dauerhaft deshalb, weil die gläser nicht geöffnet werden dürfen.
so erzählt die installation die geschichte/entwicklung der elbphilharmonie in dem gesetzten zeitraum ohne sichtbare bilder. vielmehr muss der betrachter seine eigenen, inneren bilder sich vorstellen. die installation dient lediglich als katalysator bzw als reflektionsfläche.
pro glas werden drei diafilme belichtet, das heisst jedes glas wird mit 108 dias gefüllt. über 34 monate entsteht so eine sammlung von ca 3.600 dias aus 102 kleinbilddiafilmen. die arbeit ist während ihres entwicklungsprozesses in unmittelbarer nähe zur elbphilharmonie in den räumen einer internationalen anwaltskanzlei zu sehen.
